BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 26

Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

In the medium term, an increase in the number of electric vehicles (EV) in Georgia is expected, Trend reports via the Georgian investment company Galt & Taggart.

"Four main factors impede the growth in the number of electric vehicles globally and in Georgia, namely, high cost, limited mileage on a single battery charge, lack of charging stations, and a limited choice of models," the company said.

A distance on a single charge is also increasing - if in 2011 it was 100 km, in 2020 it increased to 475 km, and will keep growing, said Galt & Taggart.

In 2019 electric cars accounted for about 2.5 percent of the total car sales both global and in Georgia.

In Georgia, the sales of electric vehicles were boosted by the changes in the customs code adopted in 2017, according to which customs duties on fuel cars almost doubled while on electric cars were completely abolished.

As of 2020, 2,485 electric vehicles are registered in Georgia that is the best result in the region in terms of population. Up to 150 EV charging stations have been installed throughout the country.

The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2030, the share of electric vehicles in total car sales will reach 32 percent.
