BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr. 26

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The large industrial enterprises that are consuming 5 megawatt-hours of electricity in Iran will buy electricity from the Iran Energy Exchange (IRENEX) as of the beginning of 2nd month of the current Iranian year (April 20, 2021), the Spokesman for the Ministry of Energy of Iran Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

“According to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Iran in the 7th month of the last Iranian year (September 22 through October 21, 2020), large industrial enterprises must buy electricity from the IRENEX,” he said.

The spokesman added that the purpose of selling electricity on the energy exchange is to reduce the role of the government in determining the price of electricity and to determine the price of electricity through competition. At present, the Electric Holding Company of Generation, Transmission & Distribution (TAVANIR) buys electricity in the form of a monopoly and delivers it to industrial enterprises at various rates.

Rajabi Mashhadi noted that the reason for the delay in the implementation of the decision so far was the creation of the necessary infrastructure and the issuance of codes related to the buy-sell operations in the exchange.

"Currently, there is about 27 percent of electricity consumption in Iran accounted for 690 industrial enterprises," he said.
