WB, IFC working with Azerbaijan in designing well-functioning wholesale, retail electricity market

The World Bank, with International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) support, is working with Azerbaijan in designing a well-functioning wholesale and retail electricity market as part of the country’s electricity sector reform program, Aliya Azimova, IFC Country Representative in Azerbaijan told Trend.

“The aim is to put in place a transparent and predictable commercial and regulatory framework and a power exchange that will facilitate electricity trading within a competitive national and regional market,” she explained.

Azerbaijani power plants produced 10.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through May 2021, a 2 percent increase year-on-year.

Electricity generation by thermal power plants reached 9.2 billion kilowatt-hours from January through May 2021, which is by 1.1 percent more than from January through May 2020.

Azerbaijani wind power plants generated 37.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through May 2021, which is by 14.1 percent less than from January through May last year.

Solar power plants produced 19.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through May 2021, which is by 12 percent more than in the same period of last year.

Hydroelectric power plants produced 642.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through May 2021, which is by 19.8 percent more than in the same period of last year.
