Azerbaijan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are working on determining the rules for supporting small renewable energy systems, Head of Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency under the Ministry of Energy Tabriz Ammayev told Trend.
“On July 12, 2021 Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed an Order on implementation of the Law on use of renewables in electricity production dated May 31. The Order is aimed at determining the support mechanisms for promoting the use of renewables in electricity generation, as well as the legal, economic and organizational framework of the use of renewables in electricity production. Moreover, jointly with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Azerbaijan is implementing the project on holding auctions in the renewable energy sphere in order to build the sub-legislative framework.
The project will help determine the auctions rules, conditions for holding the auctions, as well as prepare electricity sale and purchase contracts,” he said.
Ammayev believes that improving the regulatory framework in this sector will boost the use of renewable energy sources, as well as encourage investment in this area.
“In addition, with the support of the EBRD, we’ve started determining the rules for supporting small renewable energy systems, for example, solar panels installed on the roofs. Once the rules are approved citizens will also be able to take part in these auctions.”
