BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr.1. Of the 27 key energy infrastructure projects identified in Europe, the majority have either already been commissioned or will be completed this or next year, said the European commissioner for energy Kadri Simson, Trend reports with reference to the documents of the European Parliament.

“As a result of the implementation of the EU policies and thanks to EU financial support over the past years, Member States have diversified energy sources and strengthened security of supply. Despite these efforts, the EU’s overall import dependency for gas has increased as the EU’s domestic gas production decreased and in many Member States decisions were taken to replace coal with gas in view of meeting decarbonisation objectives,” she noted.

The energy commissioner went on to add that in a context of low gas prices, gas market participants continued to rely heavily on supplies from Russia.

“Following the call from the Informal European Council in Versailles on 10-11 March, the Commission will adopt a REPowerEU Plan with actions to make Europe independent from Russian fossil fuels. These will include stepping up efforts to diversify our gas supplies, but also improving our energy efficiency and increasing the production of renewable energy and hydrogen.

Moreover, with the completion of a number of gas projects of common interest (PCIs) which are at an advanced development stage, well-integrated networks will further strengthen the security of supply, especially in Central and South-Eastern Europe. As regards the MidCat project, Member States and project developers may reassess the business case in view of the current security of supply context, while taking into account other alternatives such as the decision to construct new LNG terminals in countries with high gas demand,” added Simson.
