BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 13. Geopolitical tensions and high energy prices have clearly exacerbated the need to accelerate the deployment of renewables in the EU even further, a spokesperson of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) told Trend.

“Europe has always been a frontrunner of the energy transition with binding renewable energy targets on EU and Member States level. Renewables are also at the heart of the European Green Deal and net zero commitment,” said the spokesperson.

The source noted that IRENA explicitly welcomes the recent proposals by the European Commission to “REPowerEU” by reducing import dependency on fossil fuels through an accelerated uptake of renewables.

“It will bring Europe closer to its strategic objective of decarbonation, green growth and energy security. IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook shows that renewables not only boost socioeconomic development but also bring independence from fossil fuels.

“The EU has one of the most ambitious renewable energy targets in the world. But meeting the CO2 reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 require much more renewables. Latest plans to increase renewables in the EU’s energy mix to 40 percent by 2030 is a strong signal. It will keep the EU on track to becoming the first carbon-neutral continent in the world by mid-century,” the spokesperson added.
