BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 16. Iran conducts research on gas exports to European countries, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Majid Chegeni told reporters, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

He made the remark at the 26th International Oil, Gas, Refining and Petrochemical Exhibition in Tehran on May 15, 2022.

According to Chegeni, so far no results have been obtained in this regard. Nevertheless, Iran seeks to expand its energy diplomacy and energy market.

“In addition, the contract on Iran's gas exports to Iraq expires next year. A new contract is currently being negotiated between Iran and Iraq,” the CEO said.

The deputy minister also pointed out that in recent weeks, Iran has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Iraqi side.

“According to the memorandum, Iran's gas exports to Iraq have been increased. The memorandum states that Iraq's debt on gas exports to Iran should be repaid by the end of May 2022. If the debt is not repaid, renegotiations will be held,” he added.

Chegeni noted that Iraq's current gas debt to Iran is $1.6 billion.
