BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 16. Iraq has paid $1.6 billion of its gas debt to Iran, on June 15, 2022, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji wrote on Twitter, Trend reports.

According to Owji, intensive discussions were conducted with the Iraqi side for several months, and the issue was resolved as a result of active energy diplomacy.

“In general, Iran's gas exports have increased by 25 percent since the beginning of this year (March 21, 2022). Payments to Iran for gas exports increased by 90 percent,” the minister added.

In total, Iraq owed about $1.7 billion for gas imports from Iran.

As a result of the US action against Iran in 2018, Iran's banking system has been blocked, and Iran was not able to receive its gas export revenues from a number of countries.

Over last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), Iran's natural gas exports amounted to 23.2 million tons worth $4.87 billion, which is an increase of 84 percent in value and 91 percent in volume compared to the preceding Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021).
