BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 17. As of June 10th, the linear part of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) is entirely completed and finishing works are being implemented for the above ground facilities – the two gas metering stations (GMS) near Stara Zagora and Komotini and the dispatching center near Haskovo, ICGB AD, project company told Trend.

The company said that the station on Bulgarian territory is at the final stage of implementation – 97 percent, and has had pneumatic tests checked out.

“The gas metering station near the Greek town of Komotini is nearly double in scale, with a 90 percent completion rate. The Greek company AVAX, which is responsible for the construction of the IGB pipeline, has committed to complete all construction works on the interconnector within June. The dispatch center near the town of Haskovo is almost 100 percent completed - it is to be equipped with the necessary dispatch control systems and testing of the entire control system is to begin. The interconnector will operate fully automatically after its commissioning. This will be the most high-tech gas pipeline in the country after launch,” said ICGB AD.

The IGB project is of key importance for increasing security of supply and for ensuring diversification of natural gas sources for Bulgaria and the region of Southeast Europe. At the regional level, IGB will provide access to the gas transmission network for Bulgarian municipalities and regions that didn’t have an option for connectivity. The interconnector with Greece is an entirely new route for the transmission of natural gas to Europe and will give Bulgaria and the region access to supplies from new sources. The project will connect the country with the Southern Gas Corridor and has excellent synergy with other major energy projects such as TAP, TANAP, EastMed and the LNG terminal at Alexandroupolis.
