BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20. A working group has been set up in Bulgaria to shorten the administrative deadlines for the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), the ICGB AD, the project company, told Trend.

“From an administrative point of view, the Directorate for National Construction Control, the Ministry of Interior and the Directorate General for Fire Safety and Protection of the Population, the State Agency for Metrology and Technical Supervision (SAMTS) and the Directorate General for the Directorate for State Technical Supervision, MoEW - RIU, Basin Directorate, Road Management and RHI all have relevance to IGB’s commissioning. A working group has already been set up in Bulgaria with representatives of the relevant institutions, with the aim of finding an effective way to shorten the usual deadlines, where possible, in order to speed up the administrative requirements pending for the launch of the pipeline.

ICGB expresses hope that there will be strong political will and dedicated actions to optimize administrative deadlines, while in parallel the team of the project company is putting in every effort to have the pipeline physically completed and tested with actual quantities of gas as soon as possible,” the company said.

The IGB project is of key importance for increasing security of supply and for ensuring diversification of natural gas sources for Bulgaria and the region of Southeast Europe. At the regional level, IGB will provide access to the gas transmission network for Bulgarian municipalities and regions that didn’t have an option for connectivity. The interconnector with Greece is an entirely new route for the transmission of natural gas to Europe and will give Bulgaria and the region access to supplies from new sources. The project will connect the country with the Southern Gas Corridor and has excellent synergy with other major energy projects such as TAP, TANAP, EastMed and the LNG terminal at Alexandroupolis.
