BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct.20. With the commissioning of new power plants, the total electricity generation capacity in Azerbaijan has reached 7953.9 MW, which means an increase of 392.4 MW or 4.9 percent compared to last year, the country’s energy minister Parviz Shahbazov said in his article published in the Respublika newspaper, Trend reports October 20.

“The energy system has 22 thermal power plants with a total capacity of 6642 MW, 30 hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 1158.1 MW, a solid waste power plant with a capacity of 37 MW, four wind farms with a capacity of 63.3 MW, 8 solar power plants with a total capacity4 of 6.1 MW and three hybrid power plants with a total capacity of 7.4 MW. The capacity of power plants operating on renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric power plants, is 1311.9 MW, which is approximately 16.5 percent of the total production capacity,” the minister notes.

Reportedly, 110-500-kilovolt 240 substations with a total capacity of 28,619 megavolt-amperes are currently in operation.

“Last year, 27.8 billion kWh of electricity was produced in Azerbaijan, and exports amounted to 1.67 billion kWh. For 9 months of this year, electricity production amounted to 21.5 billion kWh, which is 807 million kWh more than in the same period last year. During the reporting period, exports increased by 775.5 million kWh and amounted to 1.8 billion kWh. Export to Turkey amounted to 940.5 million kWh, Georgia imported 694.1 million kWh, while 95.6 million kWh, 75.6 million kWh went to Iran and Russia, respectively. Electricity imports decreased to 104.9 million kWh,” reads the article.
