Project on expansion of Azerbaijani gas reservoirs estimated to $120m

In 2005 around 1,025 billion cu m of gas was pumped to the underground gas reservoirs, which enabled to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to subscribers in winter season, Alikhan Malikov, the head of Azerigas JSC, stated on 24 February, Trend reports.

Melikov noted at present work over the project on expansion of capacities of gas reservoirs is underway. There are two reservoirs Garadagh and Kalmaz - in Azerbaijan with the total capacity of 1.1 billion cu m of gas. It is planned to increase the capacity of

the Garadagh gas reservoir to 2-2.2 billion cu m and Kalmaz to 1-1.2 billion cu of gas.

At present talks on financing of the project to be implemented in two years are underway. The World Bank displayed interest in the financing the project with the initial cost of $120m, part of funds can be approved by Azerbaijan. The capacity of the gas reservoirs is expected to be expanded for admission and preservation of gas production in the country. The gas will be directed at covering the increasing consumer need, as well as supply of new subscribers.
