Azerbaijan and Russia to Discuss Energy Exchange Issues in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Aliyev / Marlen Asgarov, vice-president of the state energy company Azerenerji, stated that representatives from the Russian energy company Unified Electricity Systems of Russia will visit Baku late this April to hold talks on the resumption of electricity import and export between Russia and Azerbaijan.

The decision was adopted during recent talks held in Moscow. The work under the new contract is expected to commence after 1 May.

At present Russia and Azerbaijan continue energy exchange at zero level at previously coordinated prices. Azerbaijan returns electricity in the volume of supply to Russia.

The current agreement on electricity delivery was intended for all of 2007. However, tariffs were adopted for the first quarter only. Import of electricity from Russia to Azerbaijan in the first quarter will be on a par with tariffs applied in 2006, namely 3,636 cents per 1 kW/h.

The cost of Azerbaijani electricity for Russia has increased from 1.58 cents to 1.8 cents per 1 kW/h. During the electricity shortage period in Azerbaijan, Russia will deliver electricity to Azerbaijan, at a capacity of 200-250 mW.
