Environmental Damage Inflicted by BP Estimated at Nearly AZN 2 mln : Minister

Trend S.Babayeva / The Minister of Ecology & Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Huseyn Bagirov, reported on 27 April at the press conference that the Ministry has a number of claims against foreign and local companies. According to him, negotiations are being held with BP in which the Company disagrees with the strict rules that were applied during the Soviet period. "Negotiations are held with the Cabinet of Ministers to define the availability of the norms. The norms may be simplified," the Minister said. The Ministry expressed dissatisfaction that a number of cleaning equipment on the platform do not always work resulting in waste water polluting the sea. "Work is being carried out to identify the amount of environmental damage has been inflicted by BP during the period of its activities. According to the initial accounts, the damages amount to nearly AZN 2 mln," the Minister said.
