Number of credit cards use in Kazakhstan increases by over 27%

The number of active payment cards in Kazakhstan amounted to 12.1 million in January, which is 27.7 percent more year-on-year, Trend reports via Kazakh media.

Their share of total cards in circulation increased from 48.8 in January 2018 to 51.1 percent.

The number of active cards increased in all regions of Kazakhstan, except for the West Kazakhstan region.

The largest growth was recorded in Almaty: by 71.4 percent, to 5.8 million cards. Astana took the second place: an increase of 6.1 percent, to 635,600 cards. The Turkistan region and Shymkent were third with the growth of 5.8 percent, to 812,700 cards.

A significant share of the active payment cards used were debit cards: 9.2 million, a year-on-year growth of 18.1 percent, but their share decreased from 81.9 to 75.8 percent.

The number of credit cards increased by 93.7 percent year-on-year to 2.7 million. Their share increased from 14.5 to 22.1 percent.

At the same time, the share of active debit cards with a credit limit and of prepaid cards decreased from 3.6 to 2.1 percent. Their number declined by 23.1 percent to 259,100 cards.
