Six cities of Georgia, which are signatories to the EU-supported the Covenant of Mayors Initiative, including Kutaisi, Gori, Telavi, Zugdidi, Rustavi and Poti, will soon receive 100 new modern energy-efficient buses, Trend reports referring to European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD).

The new buses will have lower fuel consumption, thus contributing to a reduction of emissions and a significant reduction of air pollutants.

The cities will receive the buses as part of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s Urban Transport Enhancement Program. The total cost of the project is 11.8 million euro, and EBRD will allocate 10 million euro.

Another Georgian signatory to the Covenant of Mayors Initiative, Batumi, is also planning to renew its fleet of municipal transport. Batumi has signed a contract for the supply of eight units of electric buses.

The electric buses will be equipped with video surveillance and an air conditioning system for the driver’s cab and passenger compartment. The delivery of buses is scheduled for the second quarter of 2020.

The usage of low-emission buses conforming to high safety standards and European regulations will result in a dramatic reducing emissions, improving local air quality, bringing economic and public health benefits and contributing to the fulfillment of commitments undertaken by these cities regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions in their territories.
