Georgia expects rich harvest of tangerines

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 22

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Export of tangerines amounted to 1,658 tons in Georgia in 2018, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

This year a good quality crop of tangerines is expected in Georgia, which increases export options and the opportunities of local market.

The main exporting countries were Russia (905,7 tons), Ukraine (221,9 tons), Latvia (40,6 tons) and Azerbaijan (22 tons), the report said.

With the support of the ministry and the government of Adjara, the Ministry of Agriculture of Adjara has opened a coordination headquarters for the sale of citrus fruits.

“We think 2019 will be a successful year for farmers. Due to the high quality of the crop, the number of non-standard tangerines will be smaller. Russia and Ukraine remain the traditional export markets. As a result of active negotiations with partners from Belarus, Georgian tangerines took a worthy place in the Belarusian market,” said Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Levan Davitashvill.

According to him, Georgian products are competitive. Today, Georgian tangerines are produced according to the modern standards. Last year, the country successfully exported trial lots to Poland, the Gulf countries and Central Asia.
