ADB to issue bonds in Uzbekistan’s national currency for first time

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 27

Asian Development Bank (ADB) will issue bonds in Uzbek soums, as announced by Chairman of Uzbekistan’s Central Bank Mamarizo Nurmuratov, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

“Now we are working with ADB, which intends to issue bonds in national currency for the domestic market. The volume is about $15-$25 million,” said the head of the Central Bank, without specifying the timing of the issue.

For the first time three issues of bonds of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), nominated in Uzbek soums - Samarkand Bonds - were placed on the London Stock Exchange.

The first issue of IFC bonds in Uzbek soums was carried out on May 18, 2018, in the amount of $8.4 million with a maturity of 2 years, the next two issues - in the same year and with the same volume.

Bonds were entered into with three European asset management companies. The brokerage company Citigroup Global Markets Ltd. undertook the organization of the transactions.

Since Uzbekistan joined ADB, the bank has allocated 75 loans totaling $8.1 billion, including two loans for the private sector totaling $225 million, in the country.

ADB also provided $6 million in capital investments, $218 million in guarantees and $97.7 million in guarantees.
