BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr.1

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

A total of 2 billion lari (about $600 million) has been allocated to assist the Georgian economy in the tough period caused by coronavirus global crisis, Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia said, Trend reports referring to Georgian media.

Georgian PM spoke about the main directions of the Economic Support Plan at a session of the Interagency Coordination Council on the coronavirus on April 1.

Gakharia also announced that 351 million lari (about $106 million) has been mobilized to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The government of Georgia has decided to fund utility bills for the three months from March through May, Georgian Prime Minister said.

According to the decision, each citizen who uses less than 200 kWh of electricity and 200 cubic meters of natural gas per month, will be funded for the next three months. Funding includes cleaning and water bills.

As of April 1, 115 cases of coronavirus infection were registered in Georgia.

On March 21, Georgia declared a state of emergency until April 21 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan - which is an international transport hub - began at a fish market in late December 2019. Some sources claim the coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11.
