Money transfers volume shrinks in Kazakhstan

A total of 3.1 million transfers worth 55.9 trillion tenge ($138.3 billion) were made via services of Kazakhstan’s National Bank payment systems in May 2020, Trend reports with reference to the data of the bank.

This is 51.2 percent less in volume and 3.9 percent more in value compared to Apr. 2020.

On average, 170,400 transactions worth 3.1 trillion tenge ($7.6 billion) were carried out daily.

The volume of plastic cards issued in Kazakhstan amounted to 38.8 million cards as of Jun. 1, 2020, and 54.2 percent on them were used in May 2020.

The volume of transactions via plastic cards of Kazakh issuers amounted to 223.2 million transactions worth 3.7 trillion tenge ($9.1 billion) in May 2020, which means an increase by 39.7 percent in volume and by 32.5 percent in value compared to Apr. 2020.

In turn, the share of non-cash payments in total structure of operations via plastic cards of Kazakh issuers amounted to 89 percent in May 2020 compared to 87.8 percent in volume, and to 64.8 percent compared to 64.4 percent by value in Apr. 2020.

Furthermore, the total volume of funds sent via international systems of money transfers amounted to 0.3 million transfers worth 75 billion ($185.6 million) in May 2020, which is 2.9 timed more in value compared to Apr. 2020.

Out of the total volume of transfers, 80.9 percent (0.2 million) of total volume or 94.2 percent of total value (70.7 billion tenge or $175.03 million) accounted for transfers from Kazakhstan to other countries.

Some 19.1 percent of total volume (0.05 million) and 5.8 percent of total value (4.4 billion tenge or $10.8 million) accounted for transfers in Kazakhstan. The remaining 0.1 million transfers worth 20.5 billion tenge ($50.7 million) accounted for transfers from other countries to Kazakhstan.

Total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan as of Jun. 1, 2020, consists of 17 systems, including those of National Bank, systems of money transfers and systems of plastic cards.
