Baku records increase in average monthly salary

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 2

The average monthly nominal salary of employees in Baku grew by 22.5 percent from January through April 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 and amounted to 1,004 manat ($590), Trend reports referring to the data of the Baku City Statistics Department.

At the same time, from January through May of this year, cost of paid services to the population in real terms was by 15.7 percent less than in the first 5 months of 2019 and amounted to slightly 1.7 billion manat ($1 billion), according to the department.

Legal entities provided services worth over 1.2 billion ($710 million) to the population, which made up 71.2 percent of the total cost of services.

As a result of increasing salaries and accelerating the development of the private sector, the average monthly nominal salary in Azerbaijan reached 736.2 manat ($433.05) from January through April 2020.

As of May 1, 2020, the number of hired employees in the country's economy increased by 5.9 percent compared to the same period of 2019 and reached almost 1.7 million people; 926,600 of them were employed in the public sector while 749,500 - in the private sector.

Some 19.9 percent of hired workers in the country are involved in education sector, 17.9 percent - in trade sector, 12.9 percent - in industry, 8 percent - in health and social welfare sector, 7.8 percent - in construction, 6.8 percent - public administration and defense; 4.5 percent - transport and warehousing, 3.4 percent - professional, scientific and technical activity, 3.4 percent - agriculture, forestry and fisheries, 1.7 percent - financial and insurance activity, 13.7 percent - in other spheres of the economy.
