Plastic cards in use increase in Kazakhstan year-on-year

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 40.1 million cards as of Jul. 1, 2020, which is 1.5 times more than as of Jul. 1, 2019 (26.3 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.
Of the total number of cards in circulation, 31.6 million cards were debit cards, 7.06 million cards were credit cards, and 1.4 million were other types of cards.
Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 21.5 million were used over as of Jul. 1, 2020, compared to 14.2 million cards last year, which indicates a 1.5 times increase year-on-year.
The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (7.6 million cards). Almaty city is followed by Turkestan region, including Shymkent city (3.3 million cards), and Nur-Sultan city (3.1 million cards).
In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (1.6 million cards), which also is followed by Turkestan region (784,700 cards) and Nur-Sultan city (732,800 cards).
Some 34.1 million card holders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Jul. 1, 2020, which indicates an increase by 46.5 percent year-on-year compared to 23.8 million in Jul. 1, 2019.
The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan as of Jun. 1, 2020, consists of 17 systems, including those of National Bank, systems of money transfers and systems of plastic cards.
