Azerbaijan’s RBC Consulting, jointly with the International and Central Banks, as well as the VISA payment system, plan to complete the implementation of the project for payment of travel on trains of the Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) CJSC with contactless bank cards in late 2020, Director of RBC Consulting Rashad Rahimov told Trend.

According to the consulting company, initially, a plan was considered to introduce a contactless payment system on trains only on the Baku-Sumgayit route, but given the flow of passengers in other directions, the partners agreed to develop this project for wider coverage.

Rahimov said that in the future similar projects might be used in other areas of passenger transportation. To date, the project was tested and the companies are ready to implement the project by the end of this year.

As the organization noted, the presentation of the project was supposed to take place in the early summer of this year but was postponed. The COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to implement this plan since at the moment passenger movements through the ADY have significantly decreased compared to the last year.

"The use of contactless technologies is on the priorities in the development of payment systems all over the world. This kind of project is being implemented in Azerbaijan for the first time, and this can change the approach to payment methods for travel on railway transport," RBC Consulting summed up.
