Plastic card use surges in Kazakhstan

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 41.3 million cards as of Aug. 1, 2020, which is 40.7 percent more than as of Aug. 1, 2019 (29.3 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 32.1 million cards were debit cards, 7.5 million cards were credit cards, and 1.5 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 23.4 million were used over as of Aug. 1, 2020, compared to 16.9 million cards last year, which indicates a 38.3 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (8.01 million cards). Almaty city is followed by the Turkestan region, including Shymkent city (3.4 million cards), and Nur-Sultan city (3.1 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (1.7 million cards), which also is followed by the Turkestan region (837,600 cards) and Nur-Sultan city (792,500 cards).

Some 34.9 million cardholders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Aug. 1, 2020, which indicates an increase of 34.2 percent year-on-year compared to 26.02 million on Aug. 1, 2019.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan as of Aug. 1, 2020, consists of 17 systems, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
