Net international investment position of Georgia deteriorates

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 30

The net international investment position (IIP) of Georgia amounted to -$24.8 billion (-81.3 billion lari) as of December 31, 2020, Trend reports via the National Bank of Georgia (NBG).

As reported, it accounted for -156.3 percent of the annual GDP. Net IIP deteriorated by $955.7 million compared to the previous quarter figure.

International assets amounted to $10.9 billion by December 31, 2020, down by $125.8 million quarterly.

Liabilities increased by $830 million during the quarter totaling $35.8 billion.

As of March 1, 2021, the banking sector in Georgia is represented by 15 commercial banks, including 14 - foreign-controlled banks.

In February 2021, compared to the previous month, the total assets of Georgian commercial banks (in current prices) increased by 904.05 million lari ($268.9 million) and constituted 57.31 billion lari ($17.04). The banking sector's equity capital equals 6.1 billion lari ($1.8 billion), which makes up 10.64 percent of the commercial banks total assets.
