Georgia sees increase in national currency exchange rate

The official exchange rate of the lari against the dollar in July 2021 on average per month strengthened from 3.1616 to 3.1288 or by 2.1 percent, Trend reports citing the National Bank of Georgia.

The official exchange rate of the lari against the euro has strengthened on average by 2.9 percent over the month.

In July 2021, the real effective exchange rate of the lari in Georgia appreciated by 0.3 percent compared to July 2015, while the nominal effective exchange rate depreciated by 0.6 percent.

The official exchange rate of the lari against the dollar has been established since May 2009 by aggregating transactions in the interbank market of the Bloomberg trading system. Since February 1, 2021, the Georgian foreign exchange market has completely switched to trading in the Bmatch Bloomberg system.

In July 2021, compared to July 2020, the real effective exchange rate of the lari in Georgia increased by 5.3 percent, and the nominal effective exchange rate by 0.8 percent.

In July, annual inflation in Georgia was 11.9 percent. Higher inflation was only in Turkey - 19 percent. Inflation was lower in Ukraine - 10.2 percent, Belarus - 9.8 percent, Armenia - 8.2 percent, Russia - 6.5 percent, Azerbaijan - 6 percent, the United States - 5.4 percent, and in the eurozone - 2. 2 percent.

In July, the National Bank of Georgia did not hold currency auctions. In the first four months of 2021, the regulator sold $242.9 million at seven auctions.
