Kazakhstan reports increase in usage of plastic cards

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 58.5 million cards as of December 1, 2021, in Kazakhstan, which is 25.2 percent more than as of December 1, 2020 (46.7 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 43.1 million cards were debit cards, 13.6 million cards were credit cards, and 1.7 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 29.8 million were used as of December 1, 2021, compared to 25.8 million cards last year, which indicates a 15.4 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Nur-Sultan city (13.8 million cards). Nur-Sultan city is followed by Almaty city (3.5 million cards) and Shymkent city (2.5 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Nur-Sultan city (4.9 million cards), which is followed by Shymkent (1.2 million cards) and Almaty city (1.07 million cards).

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan is 17, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
