High-speed Internet in Azerbaijan Leaves much to be Desired : Cisco Vice President

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Babayeva / Azerbaijan needs to stock up powerful telecommunications infrastructure, which needs much investing in the development of the existing base in the country, Robert Agee, the Cisco Systems Vice President for CIS, said.

Agee said that the improvement of the infrastructure will give impetus to the development of this sphere as a whole. "On the one hand the communication sector is developing like the country in general, and at the same time there are shortages, for instance, high-speed access to the internet leaves much to be desired," the Cisco official said.

Agee said that Azerbaijan can have every opportunity to use world advanced technology, but all citizens must have access to the high-speed Internet.

Earlier Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Minister for Communication and Information Technology said that over the next two years the Government will invest up to $300mln in the telecommunications sector.

Currently every 100 citizens hold 5-6 computers in Azerbaijan, 15 stationary telephones and 42-45 mobile telephones. Access to broadband communications is limited. The number of internet users comprises 10% of the people.
