Communication Minister of Azerbaijan Concerned about Low Number of Stationary Telephones in Country

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 January / cor. Trend S. Babayeva/ Ali Abbasov, the minister of communication and information technologies of Azerbaijan, expressed his dissatisfaction with the level of installation of telephones in the country. "We are concerned about the low indicators, in 2007 only14 stationary telephone sets fell on 100 people," the minister said on 16 January, summing up the board of the ministry dedicated to the results of 2007.

According to Abbasov, it is very important to lay one telephone line for every family. The ministry deems it important to lay 350 000 numbers more in order to get out of the situation.

"This is one of the priorities of the Ministry, for 2008. We want to advance this indicator up to the world average, maybe, even exceeding that," minister said.

According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies, 14.62 stationary telephone sets fell on 100 people in 2007. This figure is 33 in Baku, 9.4 in the other regions and only 5.7 telephone sets fall on 100 people in rural areas.
