Azerbaijan May Implement Contract of the Century in Telecommunications Fields

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 January / Trend corr S. Babayeva / Azerbaijan may initiate one more Contract of the Century, this time in the field of telecommunications, Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister said on 16 January. "We initiated a project on the laying of a high-speed network from the East Europe to East Asia, so as to fulfil the information gaps," the Minister said.

According to Abbasov, many countries have approved the project, but he did not specify which countries exactly.

In March to April, it is planned to meet with the representatives of the countries. A consortium may be established for the implementation of the project, the Minister said.

"Many countries agreed in keeping Azerbaijan as the central country of the project," he said. The Minister did not specify the cost of the project saying that the issue will be discussed at the meeting.

In 1994, Azerbaijan signed the Contract of the Century on development of a bloc of off-shore fields Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli, costing $20bln.
