Date Fixed for Next Meeting on Realization of Azerbaijani National Computer Project

Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 May/ corr. Trend S. Babayeva/ The next meeting of the working group on realization of Azerbaijani national computer project is fixed for 13 May, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology of Azerbaijan said.

"The preliminary version of the project and ways of financing will be discussed during the meeting," the Ministry said.

A special working group has been set up in the Ministry from the specialists of several ministries to realize the project including Intel and Microsoft. The project aims at introducing computers to the low-income layers of the population with long-term credit with lower interest rates.

The last meeting was held on 25 April.

The proposals will be submitted to the government after the terms of the project are coordinated.

The Ministry plans to begin realization of the project by the end of the year in one of the country's region.

In 2008, about 10,000 computers will be purchased to introduce them to low-income families, especially to teachers and students.

The project covers 3 years with some amendments in the future. The total value of the project has not been determined yet.

According to Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, every 5-7 computers account for 100 people in Azerbaijan while the world average is 20-25 computers. The number of internet users in Azerbaijan makes up 1mln with only 2-3% of them accounting for the regions.
