Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Open for New Mobile Operators, Says Minister of Communication

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 November / Trend corr. S.Babayeva / "Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) is open for new mobile operators," Rovshan Mammadov, the Communication and Information Technology Minister of the Autonomy, said.

"At present three GSM operators, including Azercell Telecom, Bakcell, Azerfon, and CDMA-network (Naxtel) function in the territory of Nakhchivan," Mammadov said.

Earlier, CDME-Azerbaijani operator of Catel announced its intentions to expand coverage of its network in NAR through roaming with Naxtel.

According to Mammadov, number of mobile subscribers in NAR amounts to about 150,000-160,000 people and this figure made up less than 100,000 at the end of 2007.

Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) of Azerbaijan lies to the west of Azerbaijan. It borders on with Armenia in north and east and with Turkey and Iran in west and south. The total area of NAR is 5,500 sq m with a population of over 300,000. The capital city is Nakhchivan.

Number of subscribers of mobile communication in Azerbaijan made up 5.7mln people in October, the State Committee for Statistics said. The figure exceeded forecasts of the government by 500,000 subscribers.
