Azerbaijan to Get Orbital Positions for National Satellite Communications

Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 Dec / Trend corr. S.Babayeva/ "Azerbaijan plans to get orbital positions for two satellite communications by the end of 2008," Ali Abbasov, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, said on 6 Dec.

"We plan to sign protocols to get positions," the Minister said.

One contract will be inked to produce satellite, he said. The Minister refused to publicize name of a company, with which they would sign documents.

The project on launch of satellite communication costs $200mln. The project will enter self-repayment within five years after its launch and it will bring a lot of profits to Azerbaijan within next 15 years.

Early Nov Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree to establish space industry in the country and to launch telecommunication satellites. The document says that Azerbaijan is located in advantageous geographical and economic space between Europe and Asia and it necessitates establishing and launching telecommunication satellites, which are component parts of economic and information security.
