Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 12 / Trend H.Valiyev /

The Institute of Geology under the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) jointly with the U.S Massachusetts Technological Institute established navigation station in the Neftchala region to study the seismic activity, the institute reported.

This is the third station established in Azerbaijan for the past three years. The first two stations are involved in a regional research center located in the Sheki region and in the main building of the Institute in Baku. The stations can transmit the information received from global positioning system (GPS) in the Institute of Geology via the Internet.

The Institute hopes to install GPS receivers in seismically active zones in the country's territory to solve the problem of earthquake prediction. These equipments will record the horizontal and vertical displacement at the point of installation. The results of the work will be available to a wide range of users in real time.
