Azerbaijani Commission for Radio Frequencies: Mobile services to be available on aircraft board

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 26 / Trend H. Valiyev /

The State Commission for Radio Frequencies of the Communications and IT Ministry reviewed the deployment of mobile communication services on aircrafts board, the commission head Aflatun Mammadov told Trend .

According to Mammadov, today the main issue is giving permission. Afterwards, mobile services will be available on aircrafts board.

Today, many airlines prohibit the use of mobile phones because of fears associated with the possibility of malfunction of the onboard equipment liner. The ban is explained by rapid movement between cellular networks. It can lead to a breach of their work on the ground, as well as aircraft onboard equipment. However, modern technologies allow GSM equipment to operate without interference.

"The introduction of communication services on board of aircrafts in Azerbaijan must be solved in accordance with accepted international standards. In practice, the services and data communications can be delivered in Flight mode. It deals with on-board equipment that supports this feature. But getting an official permission to use the onboard equipment is required. Today, we have already got appeals to obtain a permission. Accordingly, after getting a permission, passengers will be able to use the services of mobile communications on board of aircrafts", Mammadov said.

The subsequent stage of deployment of communications services on board will be the coordination of issues between mobile operators and air carriers, he said.

AZAL said that today the issue of providing mobile communication services on board of aircrafts is being considered by the airlines. But this issue will become more important after the expansion of aircraft park, scheduled before 2014.

Accordingly, broad opportunities of modern airliners will allow AZAL passengers to use telecommunications services on board in future.

The State Commission for Radio Frequencies allowed to use the radio frequency band of 1,800 MHz for mobile communications on board of aircrafts in November last year. The Committee said that satellite technologies will be used for calls from board of aircrafts, because it is impossible to use fixed GSM terminals during a flight.

It is necessary to pass registration in the committee to use the onboard equipment. The introduction of mobile systems on board of aircrafts can also affect the cost of airline tickets.
