The adoption of a resolution by the UN on Azerbaijan's project to create the East-West super informational highway played an important role in addressing problems related to its implementation, Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister Ali Abbasov said in his speech at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy.

The main constraining factor that negatively impacts the project is the current domestic political situation and lack of democracy in the several regional countries, Abbasov said.

The resolution put forward by Azerbaijan to create super informational "East-West", was adopted by the UN within the 66-th plenary meeting. The organization expressed support for the project, which aims to eliminate the "informational gap", reduce poverty, increase economic growth and play the role of locomotive for the development of the region. UN urged all regional countries to take the necessary measures for its implementation.

"Today, the world's major information infrastructures are developed in the two regions: first - North America and Western Europe and second - Pacific basins. Unfortunately, a considerable lag is observed in countries along the Black Sea to the Pacific Ocean, which is associated with a weak infrastructure and the low level of electronic content, which is also stored in Western countries. The East-West project initiated by Azerbaijan primarily designed to overcome the existing problem by creating a global network infrastructure and connect the West with the East," Abbasov said.

The resolution adopted by the UN is intended to join a total of 20 countries and play an important role in development of the region. Realization of the project will eliminate the "gap" between the countries within the Western European and Pacific basins.
