Profits at online retailer eBay rose 26 per cent in the second quarter thanks to growth at its PayPal online payments business and core auction site, dpa reported.

The online retail pioneer said it earned 412 million dollars, compared to 327 million dollars in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 6 per cent to 2.22 billion dollars.

The company said its core Marketplace business saw revenue grow by 11 per cent to 1.4 billion dollars as gross merchandise volume grew 2 per cent in the US and 20 per cent in international markets.

The payments business, which includes PayPal, saw revenue grow 22 per cent to 817 million dollars.

"We delivered strong second quarter results, demonstrating the global strength and increasing diversity of our business," said eBay President John Donahoe. "PayPal is strong and getting stronger, building a robust and innovative global footprint serving all of e- commerce. And our eBay turnaround remains on track, with strong performance in Europe, significant changes in the US and continued improvements to the buying and selling experience."
