Oracle sues Google over Java patent infringement

US computer technology company Oracle Corp has sued internet giant Google Inc for infringing its patent rights by using the Java software in its Android operating systems for smartphones, dpa reported according to Oracle.

The lawsuit has been filed with a San Francisco district court.

"On information and belief, Google has purposefully, actively, and voluntarily distributed Android and related applications, devices, platforms, and services with the expectation that they will be purchased, used, or licensed by consumers in the Northern District of California," the lawsuit said.

"Google has thus committed acts of patent infringement within the State of California (...)," it added.        Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly violated Oracle's intellectual ownership rights when distributing Android, US media quoted Oracle spokeswoman Karen Tillman as saying.

Oracle acquired Java as part of its purchase of Sun Microsystems Inc last year.
