Hewlett Packard, the world's largest maker of computers and printers, Thursday said profits rose 6.1 per cent in the third quarter compared to the same period last year, to 1.77 billion dollars, dpa reported.

Sales rose 11 per cent to 30.7 billion dollars, evidence of renewed demand for large corporate computers, company officials said.

Interim head Cathie Lesjak said the focus on marketing large computers had paid off. HP's expensive and powerful computers are widely used for global data transmissions and storage systems.

Investor confidence in HP has been shaken by the departure of CEO Mark Hurd, one of the superstars of American business and Silicon Valley forced to resign earlier this month. HP share prices have fallen 21 per cent this year.

Although an internal company probe into allegations of sexual harassment cleared him of those charges, an internal probe found that Hurd had fiddled his expenses to conceal his personal relationship with a woman employed by the company as an executive marketing consultant. dpa das pr Author: Daniel Schnettler
