Azerbaijan, Baku, September 20 / Trend H. Valiyev /

The Aztelekom Production Association of the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry has completed digitization of its Ganja telecom unit, the assistant chief of the Ganja telecom unit Elshad Aliyev told Trend.

The Ganja fixed communications network will be fully digitized after automatic telephone exchanges 54 and 55 are digitized.

Aliyev said that the process will be completed in the nearest month. Each of these automatic telephone exchanges serves 10,000 subscribers.

"NGN equipment has been already installed in these automatic telephone exchanges. According to the plan, they will be commissioned after cable lines are laid. They will come in 15-20 days. Chinese company Huawei Technologies is a supplier of NGN equipment," Aliyev said.

Aliyev said that after a complete digitization of automotive telephone exchanges, the numbering capacity of the entire network in Ganja will be transferred to a seven-digit numbering system. When the seven-digit numbering system is applied, telephone numbers in Ganja will begin with the number 5 (554-xx-xx, 555-xx-xx, etc.). The new system will allow the operator to increase the numbering capacity and solve the problem of the shortage of available numbers.

Ganja will be the fourth city after Baku, Sumgait and Nakhchivan where infrastructure development has required the introduction of seven-digit numbering.

There are currently eight telephone exchanges (53/54/55/56/57/58) and two automatic telephone exchanges (59) in Ganja. They are divided into two service areas and function separately. The number of automatic telephone exchanges in the telecommunications node will increase to 12 units by late 2010.
