EBRD launches project to support telecommunications sector in Azerbaijan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development launched a program of training and support of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan, head of Ministry regulation department Aliyar Tamirov told Trend.

According to him, the program of training and support, which launched today, envisages technical education in the field of telecommunications regulation.

The project will cooperate with MCIT to deal with the challenges of improving market conditions for investors and providing more consumer choice and protection under fully competitive market conditions. The training programme will explain how regulators in other countries have made important changes. The project will bring to Azerbaijan a team of experts with significant policy, regulatory and operational experience.

The training programme commences on Nov. 8, 2010 at MCIT's offices in Baku.

The work to create in Azerbaijan an independent regulator on the market of information and communication technologies will be implemented over the next two years.

The organizations such as the ITU (International telecommunication Union), the World Trade Organization and the World Bank concurred that the independence of regulators of the communications industry from the state has an important value in the telecommunications development.
