UNESCO awards SOCAR representatives for their contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies

The Expert Group of the Sate Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) was awarded medals and diplomas of UNESCO for the contribution to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies, Itar-Tass reported on Friday.

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova awarded medals "For contributions to the development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies" to a group of winners, which, in addition to specialists from Azerbaijan, and also included the Russian scientists.

The Medal was established at the initiative of the international commission responsible for developing the nanoscience and nanotechnologies theme for the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS) published by UNESCO and EOLSS Publishers. Russian Nobel Prize winner, Academician Jaures Alferov was first scientist to be awarded this prize.

Bokova praised the contribution of scientists from Azerbaijan and Russia in the development of nanotechnology and nanoscience in the world.

According to her, the establishment of this award acknowledges UNESCO's recognition of the huge role of progress in this field of science not only for the economy, but also to human health, and social life.
