Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 7 / Trend H. Valiyev /

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) call for effectively using information and communications technologies (ICT) in national projects to mitigate environmental impacts.

The ITU made the statement in a report presented at the World Radiocommunications Seminar-2010, which opened in Geneva on Dec. 6 and will run until Dec. 10.

Azerbaijan is represented at the workshop by the Communications and IT Ministry's State Radio Frequencies Administration.

The report stated that ICT play a fundamental role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and assisting countries to adapt to climate change.

The ITU voiced concrete examples of how to achieve goals to reduce environmental impacts.

The report said these goals can be achieved by introducing more efficient equipment and networks, as well as by substantially reducing energy demand

The report also noted that stress should be placed on broadband network computing power. According to ITU and GeSI experts, this data must be analyzed for environmental monitoring.
