Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 13 / Trend H.Valiyev /

The Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry has started to study the possibilities of using navigation systems, Telecommunications Department Chief Adviser Gulam Abdullayev told Trend today.

Abdullayev said a primary objective of a state program to develop communications and IT in Azerbaijan for 2010-2012 is the organization of satellite communications services. The project is also known as "Electronic Azerbaijan."

"We are now cooperating with many countries in the space industry, and the list of countries will continue to grow," he said. "Regarding which platform we will use for the navigational services, namely, whether it will be the European Galileo system, the U.S. GPS system or the Russian GLONASS system, it is difficult to say today. Studies have not been carried out in this direction. Nevertheless, we will choose a system depending on the country's needs and the benefits of the systems themselves. Work in this direction is already underway."

Abdullayev stressed that Azerbaijan's Azerspace telecommunications satellite, which will launch in 2012, could provide a certain set of functions for navigation, although the project will not be directly designed to provide navigation services.

Today, the use of navigation systems is also being considered by the Transport Ministry. The ministry is studying the possible use of traffic satellite monitoring. Work in this direction is carried out under a project to create an intellectual transport management system. The system is expected to launch in Februar.
