Kazakh telecommunication company sharply ups net profit in first quarter of 2012

Kazakh telecommunication company Kazakhtelecom increased net profit to 215.410 billion tenge (149.91 tenge = $1) in January-June 2012 compared to 29.4 billion tenge in the same period of 2011, the company reported on Thursday.

The significant increase in net profit resulted from selling 49 percent stake in GSM Kazakhstan, rendering mobile communication services in Kazakhstan under such trademarks as Kcell, Activ, Vegaline in this period. Kazakhtelecom sold its share in this company to European holding company TeliaSonera. The deal was worth $1.519 billion.

According to the preliminary information, the revenues obtained from rendered services amounted to 85.968 billion tenge in the reporting period compared to 80.8 billion tenge in January-June 2011.

In the first six months Kazakhtelecom increased number of fixed telephone lines by 47,265 including 32,871 lines in urban area and 14,394 lines in rural area.

The density of fixed telephones hit 24.34 numbers per 100 inhabitants at the end of June.

The number of Internet services users of Kazakhtelecom amounted to 2,902,811 people, including 2,796,232 users of broadband Internet.
Kazakhtelecom is the national telecommunication operator and the largest telecommunication company in Kazakhstan. The company has branches in all regions of Kazakhstan. Kazakhtelecom's main shareholder is Kazakh Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk Kazyna.
