MTS resumes work in Turkmenistan

Mobile TeleSystems, the leading telecommunications operator in Russia and the CIS, announced on Thursday the launch as from August 30 of the mobile network covering Turkmenistan and the resumption of services to subscribers who did not terminate the previous agreements.

The operator plans to begin a sale of SIM-cards by October 1.

The SIM-card which was used up till December 2010 should be inserted into the phone to register for the MTS network and receive Turkmenistan customer service. The subscriber will also receive a bonus of 20 per cent of the amount of the account balance, as well as 30 bonus minutes per day for outgoing calls within the MTS network from August 30 to September 30, 2012.

MTS subscribers can avail themselves of seven network tariffs whose price parameters coincide with the previous tariffs. Users when activating SIM-card are automatically transferred to one of the seven new tariffs in accordance with the profile of consumption of services.

"The technical condition of the MTS infrastructure in Turkmenistan has allowed us to quickly restore the network to provide a full range of communications services to more than 2.4 million subscribers. At the first stage, we begin with the launch of voice services, SMS, mobile Internet, an international communications and international voice roaming, and will soon connect the 3G network," the statement quotes the vice-president and head of the business unit of MTS foreign subsidiaries Oleg Raspopov as saying.

Lost or a faulty SIM-card with the current contract can be restored at MTS offices and dealer showrooms in Ashgabat, Balkanabat, Dashoguz, Mary, Turkmenabat and Turkmenbashi. Payment of communication services is available with scratch cards and Mobile transfer service.

In July, MTS and the Turkmentelecom State Telecommunications Company signed an agreement on the terms of the activities of Business Association MTS-Turkmenistan after the operator received all necessary licenses, technical and legal conditions for the resumption of activities in Turkmenistan.

The press release also notes that MTS plans to invest more than $40 million in network development in Turkmenistan in 2012 - 2015. Before October 1, 2012, MTS-Turkmenistan plans to begin connecting new subscribers to mobile services through more than 170 showrooms across the country.
