Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 6 / Trend H. Valiyev /
Holding the Global Internet Governance Forum in Baku is recognition of the fruitful results of the policy for society's information development in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov said at the opening ceremony today.
He said that the ICT sector in Azerbaijan is a priority area and that the president pays attention to it.
"Thanks to the president's decisions this field is developing rapidly. This is particularly so in the field of ICT in the public administration system and rendering electronic services to the population," he said. The problem with Internet governance for sustainable economic and social development as discussed at the forum demonstrates the role of the Internet in our globalising world and emphasises the importance of the forum and stipulates the broad interest in the Internet Governance."
He added this is testified by the presence of many participants representing state agencies, businesses and public organisations, at the forum.
"Azerbaijan has been actively developing recently," he said. "The ICT and Internet opportunities are widely used in the country. Internet services became available, the technology of their use expanded and the number of users increased."
He said that close mutual cooperation at international level can bring about results in resolving many issues related to the challenges of developing the global world, including Internet regulation.
"Moreover, one must not turn the Internet into a tool of terrorism, religious, racial, inter-cultural xenophobia, separatism and other manifestations that are contrary to international standards," he said.
