Turkey announces launch date of third communications satellite

The Turkish 'Türksat 5A' satellite will be commissioned in 2016, Anadolu agency reported on Thursday citing the Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yildirim.

Earlier, it was reported that Turkey is preparing for the launch of the new communications satellite. According to the report, the country's government will finance the satellite project. Work on the project development will start in the coming months and on construction of the satellite as from next year.

On December 18, 2012, Turkey launched its second Göktürk-2 satellite from the Chinese Zhiuguan base. It is being used for defence purposes. It launched its first own reconnaissance satellite RASAT in 2011.

Earlier Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Nihat Ergun said that Turkey is preparing a 10-year programme of investment in the development of satellite technology in the country.

According to Ergun, Turkey's top priority today is to create a satellite launching system.
