By Huseyn Valiyev – Trend:

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR has chosen a design institute (the name of the design institute has not yet been disclosed) which will place bottom seismographs in the Caspian Sea, the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences has told Trend.

Bottom seismic stations are planned to be installed in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea at the Umid, Bahar and Gunashli fields.

The documents for the project were prepared by the US company Kinemetrics. The company is a supplier of seismic equipment. Specialists of the company will be involved in installation of bottom seismographs.

The project envisages seismological studies, as the Caspian Sea has not only rich hydrocarbon reserves, but also seismically active zones.

Earlier, the Republican Seismic Survey Center said that earthquakes occurring in the Caspian Sea pose the greatest threat for Baku and the Absheron Peninsula.

Among the long-term plans of the Republican Seismic Survey Center is to improve the quality of offshore seismological studies.
