Uzbekistan set to develop ICT in regions

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has instructed to approve programs for development of information technologies and communications in the regions for 2018-2020 and a targeted list of priority projects by Aug.1, 2018.

This is stipulated in the presidential decree “On measures to further improve the field of information technology and communications”.

The documents should include measures to develop the telecommunications infrastructure and provide the population with quality mobile communications, broadband access to the Internet.

Also, the regions will have modern information systems, software products and databases in the field of health, social protection of the population, education, public services, tourism. Projects on the organization of "smart" and "safe" cities and regions will be implemented.

Innovative projects based on public-private partnership will be implemented within the framework of the programs.

Measures will be taken to expand the system for the provision of electronic public services in the field, especially in remote areas.

Financing of programs and the targeted list of projects will be carried out at the expense of Information and Communication Technologies Development Foundation in the amount of up to 5 percent of the amount receipts from the payment for use of a subscriber number paid by legal entities providing mobile communication services of the region concerned, as well as other sources not prohibited legislation.

In 2017, services for 7.7 trillion soums were provided in the field of information technology in Uzbekistan, which is 26 percent more than in 2016.

Uzbekistan plans to increase the share of information and communication technologies in the GDP to 4 percent.

In mid-November, Uzbekistan was named the most dynamically developing country in the field of ICT according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Uzbekistan took the 95th place in IDI Index 2017. In 2016, Uzbekistan was on the 110th place, following the revision the country was ranked the 103rd.
